About

Dr MacLaren
North

Dr North has more than thirty years of heritage management experience in Australia. He commenced his career in the NSW Government, working in heritage roles for the regulator, as an intra-governmental heritage consultant and as the in-house heritage advisor to a major public utility.

In 2006, he left the public service to establish a series of heritage consultancies: Futurepast Heritage Consulting (merged 2015), Extent Heritage (sold 2023) and Asteria Advisory (established 2024).

His work has encompassed historical archaeology, built heritage, infrastructure and industrial heritage and asset and property portfolio management.

Heritage is an increasingly contested space, and planning is a highly complex regulatory environment. While we keep expecting that complexity to lessen, that never seems to eventuate. Sound heritage advice is important in all stages of a project, from conception to planning to approval to implementation. Not having the right advice at the right time adds risk, complexity and cost to projects.

Dr North's broad experience is able to provide the strategic advice to best guide your project through these complex issues. Including, if necessary, through a legal dispute.

He works with a network of similarly experienced heritage practitioners – architects, planners, archaeologists, landscape architects and indigenous heritage specialists – to provide robust advice at the right points in the project cycle.
